Second First Impressions Review: the book I wasn't sure would workĪnd as I flicked through the pages, hungry for what came next, I found myself quite liking our Princess Shiori (or more formally Shiori'anma) and her cheekiness.Instantly I had so many questions, who was drowning? Why were they in the lake? What was going on?įor the most part, I don't read blurbs of books - which means I get the full surprise when I come to reading (although with House of Earth and Blood, which is better known as Sarah J Maas' Crescent City, this didn't prove wise) so I knew there were dragons in this book and a princess but that was it. The opening line was the type that told me that I wasn't going to want to put the book down: "The bottom of the lake tasted like mud, salt, and regret." Written by Elizabeth Lim, who many will recognise for her dazzling duology 'The Blood of Stars' which launched her onto many bookshelves with Spin the Dawn, Six Crimson Cranes promises to be a hit this year.īefore I'd even gotten to the carefully written prose I found myself dazzled by a gorgeous map - and a map at the start is always a tell-tale sign of a fantasy adventure that's going to have me hooked.

I'd heard of Six Crimson Cranes before I really knew what to expect from it, as I think was the case with a lot of the book community.
